Best months: April, May, September, October.
mid-20°C across most regions, sea warm enough for swimming in the south, 30-40% lower hotel rates than July-August
Spring runs March through May and is Spain's most beautiful season across most regions. Andalusia peaks first — by mid-March, Seville is at 23°C and the orange trees lining Barrio Santa Cruz are in full scented bloom. Las Fallas in Valencia (March 15-19) and Feria de Abril in Seville (two weeks after Easter) bookend a spring cultural calendar that rivals anywhere in Europe. By May, the whole country is at 20-26°C, sea temperatures are climbing toward swimmable in the south, and the worst of Easter crowds have cleared. The combination of weather, events, and pre-summer pricing makes May Spain's highest-value month for most travelers.
Summer in Spain is a tale of two countries. The northern Atlantic coast (Bilbao, San Sebastián, Santander, Galicia) stays 22-25°C and is precisely when most travelers should visit the north — the pintxos scene peaks, Basque beaches are usable, and the famously wet region gets its driest stretch. The central and southern interior, meanwhile, becomes dangerous to visit. Seville regularly exceeds 40°C in July and 42°C heatwaves are recorded most summers. Córdoba and Madrid follow similar patterns. Coastal Mediterranean resorts (Costa del Sol, Costa Brava, Valencia) and the Balearic Islands fill with European and domestic holidaymakers, pushing prices to annual peaks. The Canary Islands remain temperate year-round and peak with German and British winter-escapees, not summer.
Autumn is arguably Spain's underrated sweet spot. September keeps summer warmth without the crowds — Seville drops from 40°C to a manageable 32°C by mid-September, Barcelona stays at 27°C, and the Canary Islands sit at 26°C. Rioja grape harvest runs the first three weeks of September, with bodega tours at their most atmospheric. October delivers the year's most stable Andalusia weather — 18-25°C, low rain, uncrowded Alhambra tickets. La Mercè festival in Barcelona (September 22-25) is the city's biggest cultural event. By late October the north starts rain season, but the Mediterranean coast and Canaries remain strong travel choices through early November.
Spanish winter divides by latitude sharply. The central plateau (Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha) drops to freezing at night but stays dry — ideal for museum and city weekends when flights from northern Europe can be found for €40. Andalusia averages 16-19°C daytime, making it Europe's best winter city-break destination — Seville and Córdoba are uncrowded, hotel prices 50-60% below summer, and the orange trees are still laden. The Canary Islands remain the winter-sun capital of Europe, sitting consistently at 19-24°C. Skiing in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada delivers reliable snow from December 15 through mid-April, with Sierra Nevada offering the unique combination of 10:00 skiing and 14:00 tapas in Granada.

Spain is not a single climate zone. Picking the right region for your travel month matters more than the month itself.
Green, Atlantic, unlike the stereotype. Summers are mild (San Sebastián averages 23°C in August). Winters are wet but rarely cold below 5°C. Best for: pintxos in San Sebastián and Bilbao (May–September), Camino de Santiago (April–June, September–October), surfing Asturias and Cantabria (June–October).
Avoid: November–February (near-continuous rain). Summer is the main tourist season here, opposite to the south.
Continental climate — hot summers (35°C+), cold winters (frost common). Madrid sits at 650m elevation. Dry and dusty in summer. Best for: Madrid museums (October–May), Toledo and Segovia (April–June, September–November), Rioja wine country (September harvest, October).
Avoid: Madrid in July-August (residents leave for the coast, many restaurants close, heat oppressive). December-January night temperatures near freezing.
The hottest region outside the Canary Islands. Seville is Europe's hottest major city in summer, regularly 40°C+. Spring is phenomenal. Best for: Seville and Córdoba (March-May, October-November), Alhambra Granada (April-May, September-October), Costa del Sol beaches (May-October, mild enough in winter for golfing).
Avoid: Seville, Córdoba, Écija July-August (health risk in peak heat). Semana Santa everywhere but especially Seville unless you want the experience.
Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, plus Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca. Swimming season May-October. Mild winters. Best for: Barcelona (April-June, September-October), Valencia (March-May, October), Ibiza (June-September party season; May and late September for quieter hikes and beaches).
Avoid: Balearic Islands August (full hotels, wild prices, party crowds). Barcelona early August (locals on holiday, humid heat).
Subtropical. Year-round 18-26°C. December-March is peak European winter escape. Best for: hiking Teide and La Gomera (November–April), beaches (year-round), whale watching (year-round, best March-May).
Avoid: Easter week and Christmas/New Year (European winter escape floods prices). August heat+humidity combo can disappoint.
Layering essentials — light sweater, cotton shirts, smart walking shoes. Rain jacket for northern coast. Light scarf for cool Andalusian evenings. Sunglasses (Spain is one of Europe's sunniest countries, even in April).
Linen and breathable cotton only. Hat, SPF 50, refillable water bottle. Light cardigan for air-conditioned restaurants and museums. For the north: add a light rain jacket and a medium-weight sweater — Atlantic coast evenings cool sharply.
Light layers for Andalusia and the coast. Heavier mid-layers for Madrid and the north. A packable rain shell becomes essential from late October. Closed walking shoes — Spanish cobblestones are unforgiving in wet weather.
Warm coat, thermal layers, and a proper rain jacket for the north (where it rarely stops). Andalusia needs a jacket but no thermals — daytime sits at 15-18°C. Canaries need a light jumper for evenings but nothing heavier. If skiing, proper ski gear or rental.
What is the best time of year to visit Spain?
April-May and September-October. You get 20-28°C in most regions, swimming is possible in the south and Balearics, and hotel rates run 30-40% below peak summer. These shoulder-season months also offer the best mix of city sightseeing (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville) and coastal/island travel.
When is the cheapest time to visit Spain?
November to early March, excluding Christmas week and Semana Santa. Flights from northern Europe drop below €40, hotel prices fall 40-60% outside resort towns, and you still get 15-18°C daytime temps in Andalusia and the Canaries. The Canary Islands in particular offer one of Europe's best winter-escape value windows.
Is August a good time to visit Spain?
Only if you go to the north coast (Bilbao, San Sebastián, Asturias) or beach-focused destinations accepting that it will be crowded and expensive. Avoid Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, and inland Andalusia — temperatures regularly hit 40°C, half the restaurants close for vacaciones, and services slow significantly. Coastal Mediterranean resorts are packed with domestic holidaymakers.
When is the best time to visit Barcelona specifically?
Late April through June, or mid-September through October. Temperatures are 20-27°C, the Sagrada Família and Park Güell queues are shorter than summer, and you can still swim at Barceloneta. Avoid August 1-15 — heat plus humidity combine with peak tourist numbers.
Is Spain warm in winter?
It depends. Andalusia (Seville, Málaga) stays 15-20°C daytime — comfortable for sightseeing but cool for beach. The Canary Islands run 18-24°C all year and are Europe's top winter-sun destination. Madrid, Barcelona, and the north can drop to 5-10°C with rain.
When is the best time to visit Seville?
March, April (excluding Semana Santa crowds), October, November. Temperatures 18-25°C and manageable. Avoid July-August completely — 40°C+ is common and much of the center clears out. Winter is also viable for a cooler, uncrowded experience at 15°C daytime.
When is the best time for beaches in Spain?
Late May through early October for the Mediterranean coast (Costa Brava, Costa Blanca) and Balearics. Peak sea temperature 25°C in August. Canary Islands swimmable year-round — water stays above 19°C in February. Atlantic coast (Galicia, Asturias) best July-September for warmer water.
When to avoid visiting Spain?
Mid-July through mid-August if heat bothers you and you're going inland (especially Andalusia and Madrid). Semana Santa week if you want lighter crowds and lower prices — reserved only for travelers specifically wanting the processions. Late November through early March if the north coast is your focus (constant rain).
