January — WORST MONTH

Freezing rain, zero light, and tourists who’ve given up on life. Hotels run €80-120 but you’ll pay for the misery. Only for hardcore daredevils or those avoiding crowds—no one else.

February — AVOID

Same wet misery as January, slightly less snow but still soul-crushing. Hotels €85-130—cheap but you’ll wish you stayed home. Skip unless you’re a masochist or writing a depressing novel.

March — WORST MONTH

Chilly, grey, and the tulips haven’t even bloomed yet. Hotels €90-140 but it feels like a discount on sadness. Families? No. Culture lovers? Also no. Just… avoid.

April — BEST MONTH

Spring hits hard: tulips everywhere, sun for real (not just a tease), and crowds haven’t exploded. Hotels €120-180—worth every euro. Perfect for couples or solo explorers; skip if you hate mild weather.

May — BEST MONTH

Warm enough to skip the coat, rain less frequent, and the city’s buzzing but not packed. Hotels €150-220—slightly pricier than April but so worth it. Families? Yes. Culture lovers? Double yes. King’s Day is mid-April, so May’s the calm after the storm.

June — AVERAGE

Hotter, sunnier, but the city turns into a sweaty tourist zoo. Hotels €170-250—paying for the chaos. Great for festival junkies (King’s Day is April, but June’s wild), but avoid if you hate crowds or paying €20 for a beer.

July — WORST MONTH

Heatwave, endless crowds, and canals smelling like a sweaty gym. Hotels €200-300+—you’re paying for the misery. Avoid unless you’re into walking through a human sausage machine. Only for the brave (or the delusional).

August — WORST MONTH

Same as July but with more tourists and zero breeze. Hotels €190-280—pricey for a sweaty, crowded slog. Skip if you want to see the Anne Frank House without a 2-hour queue. Not even the Amstel beer fixes this.

September — BEST MONTH

Shoulder season magic: cool breeze, fewer crowds, and the city feels alive but not frantic. Hotels €130-190—best value all year. Couples? Yes. Culture lovers? Absolutely. Skip the rain, but you’ll barely notice it.

October — AVERAGE

Rainy, gloomy, but the chestnut trees are gorgeous. Hotels €140-200—still pricey for the weather. Great for book lovers or those who don’t mind wet shoes. Avoid if you’re chasing sunshine or have a fragile sense of joy.

November — WORST MONTH

Gray, damp, and the city feels like a damp sweater. Hotels €110-170—cheap but you’ll feel it. Skip unless you’re into morbid poetry or the Christmas markets (late Nov). Families? No. Budget travelers? Maybe, but why?

December — WORST MONTH

Dark, cold, and touristy. Hotels €110-170—cheap but the Christmas markets are overrun. Avoid if you want peace; perfect if you’re a fan of crowded, festive misery. Not romantic. More like a cold, wet nightmare.

Best Time to Visit Amsterdam on a Budget

April or September. Hotels €120-190, less rain, and you won’t pay a fortune for a canal view. Skip January—save your euros for a real reason.

Best Time for Families

May. Warm enough for strolling, fewer crowds than summer, and the Vondelpark is perfect for kids. Hotels €150-220—worth the splurge for peace of mind. Avoid July/August: it’s a zoo with strollers.

Best Time for Couples

April. Tulips, mild weather, and canals without crowds. Hotels €120-180—ideal for a quiet escape. Skip July/August: it’s too hot, too loud, and too many strangers trying to take your photo.

Flavia's Personal Notes — Amsterdam

Rent a bike but be careful — the bike lanes have their own traffic rules and locals will yell at you. Vondelpark for a free afternoon. The Anne Frank House needs tickets weeks in advance. I love the Jordaan neighborhood for canal-side coffee. Don't bother with the Red Light District tour.
