Getting from Porto's Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) to the city center is straightforward. Here’s the real deal on all options, with actual prices, times, and who they suit best.

Train (Comboios de Portugal - CP)

Take the train from Aeroporto station (inside the airport terminal, 5-min walk from arrivals). Trains run every 15-30 mins, 6am-11pm. Journey time to Campanhã station (city center) is 25 minutes. From Campanhã, it’s a 10-minute walk or €0.60 bus ride to Ribeira or Sé. Total time: 35-40 minutes.

Price: €2.90 single ticket (buy at station machines or online via CP app). €4.50 if booked online in advance. Kids under 4 ride free.

Pros: Reliable, frequent, quiet, and comfortable. Best for solo travelers or couples who want to avoid traffic. Free Wi-Fi on most trains.

Cons: Not ideal for heavy luggage (stairs to platform). Can get crowded during rush hour. Campanhã station is a 10-min walk from the main historic center.

Best for: Budget travelers (cheaper than taxi), business travelers (reliable for meetings), and families with older kids (easy to move around).

Bus (Carris / Rede Expressos)

Take the 600 bus from outside Terminal 1 (marked "600" on the map). Runs every 15-20 mins, 5am-1am. Direct to Rua da Boavista (5 mins from city center). Journey time: 20 minutes (but traffic can add 10-15 mins).

Price: €2.50 single ticket (buy at machine outside arrivals or via app). €2.20 if paid via contactless card (tap on bus reader).

Pros: Cheapest option. No need to navigate train stations. Drops you right in the city center near shops and hotels.

Cons: Can be packed with tourists and locals, especially weekends. Slow during traffic. Not ideal for strollers or heavy bags (no dedicated space).

Best for: Backpackers and budget travelers. Avoid if you have lots of luggage or are traveling late (last bus at 1am).

Taxi

Flag down a taxi outside arrivals (no pre-booking needed). Drivers must use meters. Journey time to city center: 15-25 minutes (depends on traffic). Avoid rush hour (7-9am, 5-7pm) for faster trips.

Price: €15-€20 for the ride (€2.50 base fare + €1.50/km). Total usually €15-18. No tip needed.

Pros: Door-to-door service. Best for groups (3+ people) or late-night arrivals. No walking or transfers.

Cons: Expensive for solo travelers. Can be slow in traffic. Drivers sometimes overcharge if you’re unfamiliar with the city (always check meter).

Best for: Families with young kids (no walking with strollers), business travelers arriving late, or groups of 3+.

Private Transfer (Uber/Lyft / Local Companies)

Book via Uber/Lyft (€25-€35) or companies like Porto Transfer (€30-€40 for 1-3 people). Pick-up at arrivals. Journey time: 20-25 minutes.

Price: Uber: €25-€35. Local transfer (e.g., Porto Transfer): €30-€40 fixed price for 1-3 people. No surge pricing.

Pros: Fixed price (no meter surprises). Driver meets you at arrivals. Spacious for luggage or strollers. Ideal for first-time visitors.

Cons: More expensive than taxi or bus. Not available 24/7 (some companies stop at midnight).

Best for: Families (easy with kids and bags), business travelers (no stress), and travelers with heavy luggage.

Which is Best for You?

Budget travelers (solo): Bus (€2.50). It’s the cheapest, but be ready for crowds. Train (€2.90) is a close second if you prefer less standing.

Families: Private transfer (€30-€40) or taxi (€15-€20). Avoid the bus if you have strollers or lots of bags. Train is okay for older kids but requires walking.

Business travelers: Train (€2.90) or private transfer (€30-€40). Train is reliable for morning meetings. Private transfer avoids traffic stress.

General rule: If you’re alone and want to save cash, take the bus. If you’re with family or tired after a flight, pay the extra for a taxi or private transfer. The train is the sweet spot for most travelers—cheap, fast, and stress-free.

Key Notes

No metro to the airport. The metro stops at Campanhã, but you need a train or bus to get to the airport first.

Bus stops: Outside Terminal 1 (not inside). Look for "600" signs.

Train station: Aeroporto station is inside the terminal. Follow signs to "Comboios" after baggage claim.

Arriving late? Bus runs until 1am, taxi is always available, but train stops at 11pm.

Don’t pay more than €20 for a taxi—if a driver quotes €25+, walk to the taxi stand and ask for a meter.
