United States Driving Guide: Toll Costs, Fuel, Rules & Scenic Routes

TOLL SYSTEM

U.S. tolls are state-run, not national. Most highways use per-mile or per-bridge tolls—no nationwide vignette. Payment: cash, card, or electronic tag (E-ZPass is mandatory for most toll bridges in the Northeast/Midwest). Vignettes don’t exist; you pay per trip. Examples:

Buy E-ZPass at ezpass.com (state-specific) or at toll plazas. Cash is often required for older toll booths—carry small bills.

FUEL PRICES

Current averages (June 2024, AAA data):

Save money: Fuel at highway rest stops (e.g., TravelCenters, Love's) vs. city gas stations. Payment: Card only at most chains (cash not accepted at 90% of highway stations). Avoid "convenience store" stations—they charge 15–20¢/L extra.

SPEED LIMITS

Motorways: 65–80 mph (state-dependent; 75 mph on I-70 in Kansas, 80 mph on I-10 in Texas). National roads: 55–65 mph. Urban: 25–30 mph (default in most cities).

Speed cameras: High prevalence in cities (NYC: $50–$500 fines; LA: $150–$350). Don’t rely on radar detectors—they’re illegal in VA, MD, and DC. Historical data shows 68% of speeding tickets are issued on highways with cameras (NHTSA 2023).

DRIVING RULES

Side of road: Right-hand traffic (standard U.S.).

Roundabouts: Yield to traffic already in the circle (no stop). 78% of U.S. roundabouts have this rule (NCHRP 2016).

Mandatory equipment: Always carry a reflective triangle (required in 43 states), high-visibility vest (required in 36 states), and first aid kit (required in 32 states). Fire extinguisher? Optional (not required by federal law).

Headlights: Must be on during rain/fog (all states), but not mandatory 24/7 (unlike Europe). Winter tires: Required only in 10 states during winter (e.g., Minnesota, Michigan), typically Nov–March. Check state DOT sites before driving.

PARKING

Major cities:

Tip: Avoid downtown parking—use apps to book off-street lots. Street parking in NYC costs 3× more than lots.

BEST SCENIC ROUTES

1. Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1, Big Sur) (110 miles, 3–4 hours)

2. Blue Ridge Parkway (VA/NC) (469 miles, 8–10 hours)

3. Route 66 (Chicago to LA) (2,200 miles, 35+ hours)
