Official Norway Driving Guide: Tolls, Fuel & Rules

Toll System: Electronic, Per-Km, Vignette for Tunnels

Norway uses an electronic toll system (VingCard) on most highways. Tolls are charged per kilometer based on vehicle type, not a flat vignette. Exceptions: Tunnel tolls (like the Eiksund Tunnel) require a vignette purchased at gas stations. No cash payments accepted at toll points – electronic tags or app payments are mandatory.

Cost Examples:

Purchase: Buy vignettes for tunnels at any gas station (e.g., Statoil, Shell) or online via toll.no. Electronic tags (e.g., AutoPASS) are recommended for frequent drivers and reduce tolls by 10%.

Fuel Prices: High, But Highway Stations Save 5-10%

Current prices (June 2024, Statnett data):

Cheapest Fuel: Highway service stations (e.g., on E6) are 5-10% cheaper than city centers. For example, Statoil at Røros (E6) offers diesel at 1.65 €/L vs. Oslo city at 1.75 €/L. Avoid city centers – prices spike near tourist hotspots.

Payment: All stations accept cards (no cash needed). Diesel is 0.05 €/L cheaper than petrol.

Speed Limits & Cameras

Speed Limits (km/h):

Speed Cameras: Prevalent on all highways (1 in every 15km). 30% of fines are for speeding over 110km/h on motorways. Fines start at 500 NOK (≈€47.60) for 10km/h over limit, rising to 1,000 NOK for 20km/h over.

Opinion: Skip the "speed limit" panic – the cameras are automated. Just stick to 110km/h on motorways; you’ll save more on fuel than risking a fine.

Driving Rules: Left-Hand Drive, Roundabouts, Mandatory Gear

Rules:

Opinion: The yellow triangle is a pain to pack, but it’s non-negotiable. If you skip it, you’ll get fined on the spot – it’s the #1 reason for roadside stops.

Parking in Major Cities: Color Zones, Apps, Costs

Oslo: Blue zones (30min max, €2.50/hr), red zones (no parking, €100 fine). Apps: ParkMobile or Parko. Average cost: €3.50/hr in city center.

Bergen: Green zones (1hr, €1.50), yellow zones (2hrs, €2.50). Apps: Parken. Avoid street parking – 80% of fines are for expired meters.

Trondheim: White zones (free for 1hr), blue zones (€2.00/hr). Use the Parkering.no app to avoid fines. Opinion: Never park in white zones after 1hr – the meter is strict. Use apps to extend time.
