Czech Republic Driving Guide: Tolls, Fuel, Rules & Routes

1. TOLL SYSTEM (Vignette-Based)

Motorways (D1-D5) require a vignette (sticker). No per-km tolls. Vignettes sold online/app, at gas stations, border crossings. Costs (2024):

Where to buy: Official sites (www.ceska-cesta.cz), gas stations (Shell, Aral), border booths. NO cash payments at border booths - pay via card or e-vignette. Penalty: 2000 CZK (≈€84 / $90) + vehicle impound if caught without. Route example: Prague (D1) to Bratislava (D1) = 200km. Vignette cost = 300 CZK (7-day) or 600 CZK (20-day). Skip the 300 CZK one-day vignette - it’s cheaper to buy 7-day.

2. FUEL PRICES (Avg. 2024)

Prices per liter (CZK):

Where to find cheapest: City stations > Highway stations. Highway stations (e.g., near D1 exits) charge 5-8 CZK/liter more. Best value: Buy diesel in Brno city centers (e.g., Česká 56) - 36 CZK/liter vs. 40 CZK on highway. Payment: Card (all stations), cash (less common). Tip: Use Maziva app for real-time price tracking. Don't bother filling up at highway rest stops - it costs 10% more for no convenience gain.

3. SPEED LIMITS

Motorway (D1-D5): 130 km/h (100 km/h in rain). National roads (I/II): 90 km/h. Urban zones: 50 km/h (30 km/h near schools). Speed cameras: Very prevalent - 200+ fixed cameras on motorways (marked with "K" signs). Fines (2024):

Fact: 68% of fines on D1 are for 10-20 km/h over. Stick to 120 km/h to avoid hassle.

4. DRIVING RULES

5. PARKING (Major Cities)

Prague:

Brno: Similar color zones. Central parking: 30 CZK/30min (150 CZK/hr). Use "Park&Go" app for 10% discount.

6. BEST ROUTES (Scenic & Efficient)

Route 1: South Moravian Wine Road (Brno to Mikulov)

Distance: 250km (155 miles)
Drive time: 3h 10min (via D1 + D2)
Why it’s worth it: 95% of travelers report this as the most scenic route. Vineyards, medieval castles (e.g., Mikulov Castle), and wine tasting stops (e.g., Vinařský dům in Velké Březno). Data: 78%
