Austria Driving Guide: Tolls, Fuel & Rules (2023 Data)

TOLL SYSTEM: Vignette Mandatory

Austria uses a digital vignette (Mautschein) system – no per-km or cash tolls. All vehicles over 3.5 tons require it; cars need it for all motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen). Costs (2023): Examples: Brenner Pass (Innsbruck to Brixen, 120km) costs €10 for 10 days. Grossglockner High Alpine Road (100km) is free except for the toll section – €8.50 for a 7-day vignette covers it. Payment: Buy at border posts (e.g., Brenner Pass), gas stations (e.g., OMV, Shell), or online (www.mautonline.at). DO NOT buy from roadside vendors – it’s illegal and untraceable.

FUEL PRICES: Current & Cheapest

As of October 2023 (per ÖAMTC): Cheapest places: Fuel is typically 10–15% cheaper on highways vs. city centers (e.g., OMV at A10 highway rest stops vs. Vienna city stations). Avoid gas stations inside cities – prices spike near tourist zones. Payment: Credit/debit cards (no cash needed). Always pay before pumping at major chains (OMV, Shell, Aral).

SPEED LIMITS & ENFORCEMENT

Speed Cameras: Austria has over 1,200 fixed cameras (mostly on motorways). Fines start at €150 for 10 km/h over limit, rising to €300+ for 20+ km/h over. Opinion: Don’t gamble – cameras are everywhere on the A2 (Vienna to Salzburg) and A10 (Klagenfurt). It’s not worth the risk.

DRIVING RULES & MANDATORY EQUIPMENT

Opinion: Skip the "winter tire" myth. If it’s snowing, you need chains or winter tires. Many rental cars don’t come with them – book them in advance.

PARKING IN MAJOR CITIES

Vienna: Salzburg: Blue zones (€2.50/hour) near train station; €0.50/hour in outskirts (e.g., Hellbrunn). Opinion: Don’t park in Salzburg city center – it’s a time-sink. Use the park-and-ride at Hellbrunn (€2/day) and bus in.

BEST SCENIC ROUTES (2023 Data)

  1. Brenner Pass (A13): 120 km (Innsbruck to Brixen, 2 hours). Why it’s worth it: Alpine vistas, historic villages, and a free road (vignette covers it). Avoid the Grossglockner detour – it’s a toll trap with worse views. Don’t bother with the Grossglockner High Alpine Road – it’s overpriced for the experience (€8.50 toll + €10 for parking) and crowded.
  2. Tauern Road (A10, Hochalpenstraße): 140 km (Klagenfurt to Salzburg, 2.5 hours). Why it’s worth it: Dramatic mountain passes, no tolls (vignette covers), and better views than the Brenner. Stop at the Krimml Waterfalls (free entry). Opinion: This is the best route for scenery vs. cost – no tolls, no crowds.
  3. Wachau Valley (B140): 100 km (Melk to Krems, 2 hours). Why it’s worth it
