Traveling with Pets to Albania: Your Complete Guide

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: What You MUST Have

Albania requires either an EU Pet Passport (for EU citizens) or a Veterinary Health Certificate (VHC) for non-EU travelers. Forget the "pet passport" myth for non-EU – it's a VHC issued by your vet. The EU Pet Passport is valid for entry. For non-EU, the VHC must be on the official USDA APHIS Form 7001 (US) or equivalent from your country's authority. Get this document 10 days before travel. Start planning 31 days ahead: rabies vaccine must be given 21+ days pre-travel, then the vet issues the VHC within 10 days of your flight.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS: Non-Negotiables

Rabies vaccine must be administered at least 21 days BEFORE your travel date (not the day of travel). Microchips MUST be ISO 11784/11785 standard – older chips won't work. If you're traveling from a non-EU country (like the US or Canada), you need a tapeworm treatment 24-48 hours before arrival. Albania doesn't require it for EU travelers. Bring proof of all vaccinations in the EU Pet Passport or VHC. No exceptions.
