Day 1
Morning: Ulus & Historic Center
Start at Ulus Square, the heart of Ankara’s political past. Wander the Ottoman-era streets, spotting the old Turkish Grand National Assembly building (now the Museum of the Republic). Grab a quick breakfast of simit (sesame bread rings) and ayran (yogurt drink) from a street vendor near Ulus - about 3-5 TL. Walk 10 mins to the Ankara Castle (Ankara Kalesi), a 4th-century fortress with stunning city views. Climb the stone walls for photos (free entry, 20 TL for guided tour if you want).
Afternoon: Anıtkabir & Republic Square
Take a 15-min taxi (10-15 TL) to Anıtkabir, Atatürk’s mausoleum. Arrive by 1:30 PM to see the changing guard ceremony (check times online first). Spend 1.5 hours exploring the complex - the museum, the eternal flame, and the vast gardens. Budget 20 TL for the museum entry. Exit to Republic Square (Cumhuriyet Meydanı), where you’ll find the Turkish War of Independence Museum (free, but bring ID).
Evening: Kızılay & Dinner
Walk 20 mins from Anıtkabir to Kızılay Square (or take a minibus for 5 TL). This is Ankara’s lively downtown. Grab dinner at a local kebab house - look for places serving Adana kebabs or doner (15-25 TL for a full meal). Sit at a sidewalk table, watch locals chat, and enjoy the buzz. End with dessert: try baklava from a street stall (5 TL) while strolling through the pedestrianized streets of Kızılay.
Day 2
Morning: Çankaya & Modern Ankara
Take a minibus from Kızılay to Çankaya (5 TL, 15 mins). Start at the Çankaya Mansion (Çankaya Köşkü), Atatürk’s former residence turned museum (10 TL entry). Explore the surrounding gardens and views of the city. Head to the nearby Kızılay Market for fresh produce - grab a cup of çay (tea) from a vendor (2 TL) while browsing.
Afternoon: Ataturk Park & Local Life
Walk 15 mins to Ataturk Park (Atatürk Parkı), a peaceful green space in the city center. Rent a rowboat on the small lake (25 TL for 30 mins) or just relax under the trees. For lunch, find a small restaurant serving manti (spiced meat dumplings with yogurt sauce) near the park entrance (10-15 TL). Avoid touristy spots - follow locals to the ones with long lines.
Evening: Çankaya District & Dinner
Stroll through Çankaya’s upscale neighborhood, lined with cafes and shops. Have a coffee at a local spot like Diner or a small chain (5-8 TL for coffee). For dinner, head to a family-run restaurant specializing in kavurma (slow-cooked meat stew with vegetables) - expect to pay 20-30 TL for a meal. Finish with a stroll along the streets of Çankaya, people-watching as locals enjoy the evening air.
Day 3
Morning: Kızılcahamam & Thermal Baths
Take a 30-minute minibus from Kızılay to Kızılcahamam (5 TL, 15 TL for taxi). This historic district is famous for its ancient Roman and Ottoman thermal baths. Visit the Kızılcahamam Hamamı (thermal bath complex) - the old one is free to walk past, but entry to the public bath is 15 TL (open 8 AM-6 PM). Soak in the warm waters (or just sit by the pool) for a unique local experience. Grab a quick breakfast of menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes) at a cafe nearby (8 TL).
Afternoon: Kızılay & Shopping
Take the minibus back to Kızılay (5 TL). Spend the afternoon exploring the area’s shops. Browse the bookstores on Sıhhiye Street or pick up souvenirs like Turkish ceramics at a small shop in Kızılay. For lunch, try a local bakery for pide (Turkish flatbread with toppings) - 5-7 TL each. Find a quiet spot in Kızılay Park to eat while watching the city buzz.
Evening: Sunset & Farewell Dinner
Head to the Kızılay Square terrace at sunset for panoramic views of Ankara. The city lights start to come on around 7 PM - it’s a great spot for photos. For your final meal, go to a traditional Ottoman restaurant in Kızılay serving içli köfte (stuffed meatballs) or fish soup (çorba) (25-35 TL). End the night with a walk through the illuminated streets of Kızılay, maybe stopping for a late-night kebab from a street vendor (10 TL).
