Look, travel insurance for the UK isn’t mandatory like it is for some Schengen countries. But you’d be nuts not to get it. Seriously. The NHS is for UK residents only. Tourists? You pay out of pocket for everything. One broken ankle from slipping on wet cobblestones could cost you $5,000+.
Forget anything else. Your policy MUST cover medical expenses, emergency treatment, and hospital stays. Standard UK medical insurance plans (like those offered by some credit cards) often don’t cover tourists or have massive exclusions. Pay for a policy with at least $250,000 medical coverage. That’s the bare minimum. Don’t skimp here. It’s the only thing that matters if you get sick or hurt.
For most tourists in cities, evacuation coverage is a waste of money. The UK has great hospitals. Unless you’re doing serious trekking in the Highlands or skiing in the Lake District (where accidents happen), skip this add-on. If you do need it, your basic policy should cover it if you’ve paid for medical coverage.
If you booked a $1,200 non-refundable castle stay or a $800 flight to Edinburgh, then yes, cancellation coverage is smart. But if you just booked a cheap hostel and a train ticket, skip it. The UK has terrible weather—rain, fog, sudden storms—but most travel insurers won’t cover "weather delays" unless it’s a major disruption (like a canceled flight due to a volcanic ash cloud, which is rare). Don’t pay extra for "rain delays." It’s a scam.
EHIC cards are for EU citizens traveling within the EU. If you’re from the US, Canada, Australia, or anywhere outside the EU, an EHIC card is useless for the UK. It won’t cover you. Don’t waste time applying for one. Your travel insurance is your only safety net.
Weather is the biggest headache. One minute you’re walking through London’s parks, the next you’re stuck in a flash flood in the Lake District. But insurers won’t cover "bad weather" unless it’s a natural disaster. Don’t rely on them for that. Also, don’t assume your phone insurance covers damage abroad—most don’t. And yes, you can get robbed in London. But theft coverage is usually cheap ($5–$10 extra), so add it. It’s worth it.
Pay $35–$45 for a policy that covers medical expenses (with $250k+ coverage) and basic baggage theft. That’s all you need for the UK. If you’ve paid for non-refundable trips, add $25–$40 for cancellation. Skip everything else. Your cheap policy will save you thousands if you get sick, hurt, or stranded. Don’t be the tourist who gets billed $2,000 for a hospital visit because they thought "NHS = free for everyone." It’s not. Get the medical coverage. Period.
