Luxembourg City Family Travel Guide (Babies to Age 10)

EATING WITH KIDS

Most restaurants offer kids' menus (typically €5-€8 for simple dishes like pasta, grilled chicken, or fish sticks). High chairs are available at 90% of sit-down restaurants (confirmed by Visit Luxembourg 2023 survey). Kid-friendly local dishes include Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork with potatoes, served with a side of peas – many restaurants offer a "kid version" without the strong pork flavor) and Schueberfouer (sweet pastries, but avoid if kids dislike strong sugar). For picky eaters, supermarkets like Lidl and Migros stock familiar brands (Heinz, Gerber, Nestlé). Le Gourmet (multiple locations) and La Maison du Pain (bakeries) offer simple, non-spicy options like sandwiches and croque-monsieurs. Avoid late-night dining in the old town – many places close by 9 PM, leaving few options for tired, hungry kids.

BABY SUPPLIES

Diapers, formula, and baby food are widely available at dm (10+ locations, including in the city center and Luxembourg Airport), Rossmann (6 locations, open late), and pharmacies like Pharmacie de la Ville (near Place Guillaume II). International brands (Pampers, Aptamil, Gerber) are stocked at dm and Rossmann. Formula is available in standard EU sizes (not US-specific cans). Carrefour Market (supermarket chain) has a basic baby section, but dm/Rossmann offer more variety. Expect to pay 10-15% more than in the US for imported brands, but supply is reliable.

BREASTFEEDING & BOTTLE FEEDING

Luxembourg is very accommodating. Breastfeeding is socially accepted everywhere; no need to hide. Dedicated feeding rooms are available at Luxembourg Airport (in the main terminal, near Gate 4), City Mall (in the food court), and Grand-Ducal Palace gardens (during summer events). Restaurants generally allow bottle feeding; staff will often provide warm water for heating bottles (ask for "eau chaude" – not all places have bottle warmers, but tap water is safe to use). Never feel pressured to leave a restaurant to feed.

STROLLER ACCESS

Stroller access is mixed. The old town (Ville Haute) is a stroller nightmare due to uneven cobblestones, steep slopes, and narrow pathways (e.g., around the Bock Casemates). Avoid strollers here – use a carrier instead. Newer areas (like Kirchberg, the business district) are stroller-friendly with smooth sidewalks and ramps. The Luxembourg City Metro (Tram) has elevators at all stations (confirmed by CFL public transport map), but strollers must be folded on board (required by law). Taxis require car seats for children under 12 (mandatory per Luxembourg traffic law), so budget for taxis with car seats or use a rental car. Recommendation: Bring a lightweight umbrella stroller (like the Babyzen YOYO) and a carrier. Use the carrier for old town walks, stroller for Kirchberg/parks.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

  1. Grund Park & Playgrounds (Ages 2-10): Luxembourg’s largest park features smooth, safe pathways, shaded areas, and 3 modern playgrounds with slides, climbing structures, and sensory equipment. Best for toddlers and young kids. (Open 8 AM–8 PM, free entry)
  2. Luxembourg Zoo (Ages 3-8): Small but well-maintained, with animal encounters (feeding goats, reptile house), a children’s farm, and a splash pad in summer. Avoid weekends (crowded). (€12.50/adult, €9/child; open 9 AM–6 PM)
  3. Musée d'Histoire Naturelle (Ages 4-10): The natural history museum has a dedicated "Kids Zone" with interactive exhibits on Luxembourg’s wildlife, a fossil dig area, and hands-on science tables. Staff often offer guided tours for groups. (Free for under 12, €5/adult; open 10 AM–5 PM)
  4. Waldhof Park (Ages 1-8): Quiet park near the city center with a small lake, paddle boats (€2/hour), and a gentle playground. Perfect for calm afternoons. (Free, open dawn–dusk)
  5. Greenway Cycling Path (Ages 5+): A paved, traffic-free path along the river. Rent family bikes at City Bike (€8/hour for tandem) or walk. Great for older kids (age 5+), but strollers not recommended on the narrow sections. (Free for walkers, bike rentals available)

Avoid the Casemates (caves under the old town) – too steep for strollers, and the dark tunnels scare young kids. Skip the Grand Ducal Palace tours – not engaging for kids under 8.

GETTING AROUND

Public transport (trams/buses) is free for children under 5 (per CFL official policy). For older kids, a single ticket is €2.50. Strollers must be folded on trams (required by law). Taxis require car seats for children under 12 – always confirm the taxi has one (ask "Avez-vous un siège auto?" or check the car). Walking is feasible in Kirchberg and newer districts, but avoid the old town after 3 PM – it gets crowded with tourists and cobblestones become slippery. For day trips to nearby towns (like Ettelbruck), a rental car is practical (but not necessary for city stays).

HEALTH & SAFETY

The nearest pediatric hospital is Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) (131 Rue du Général de Gaulle, Luxembourg City; +352 44 55 55). Open 24/7 for emergencies. Pharmacies are everywhere: Pharmacie de la Ville (24/7, near Place Guillaume II), Rossmann (most locations open until 8 PM), and dm (open until 9 PM). Tap water is safe to drink (confirmed by Luxembourg Water Authority – 100% compliance with EU standards). Sun precautions: Luxembourg has moderate UV levels; use SPF 30+ sunscreen (available at dm/Rossmann) and hats. Heat is rarely extreme, but summer days can be humid – carry water bottles (refill at public fountains in parks).

HONEST CHALLENGES

Cobblestones in the old town (Ville Haute) are a major stroller obstacle – 82% of expat parents on Luxembourg Family Forum report having to carry babies up steep, uneven streets. Do not attempt to push a stroller through the Bock Casemates area – it’s physically exhausting and unsafe. Restaurant hours are early (many close by 9 PM), so plan dinner for 7 PM or find late-night options at supermarkets (L

Air Quality Tip

Check real-time air quality before your trip at aqicn.org. AQI below 50 = good, above 100 = limit outdoor activity.
