Activation & Setup

Download the Airalo app before your flight. At Istanbul Airport (IST), connect to Free Wi-Fi (not the paid one) to scan the QR code. Don’t try to activate on airport Wi-Fi—it blocks eSIM setup. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM. On Android (Samsung, Google Pixel), use the SIM card slot for physical SIM and activate eSIM via the app. Dual-SIM works flawlessly: keep your phone number on the physical SIM, use eSIM for data.

1. Convenience Stores (7-Eleven, Kipa, BIM)

They sell scratch cards (called "kupon"), but not for data refill. You need to enter a code (e.g., "100000000000") at a Turkcell/Vodafone booth. Stores won’t help you—cashiers say "Biraz bekleyin" (wait a sec) while you fumble with Turkish instructions. Pro tip: Buy a 10 TL scratch card (about $0.40) from any BIM store, then go to a Turkcell booth and say "Data doldurmak istiyorum" (I want to refill data).

2. Carrier Apps

• Turkcell App: Requires Turkish ID/phone number. Won’t accept international credit cards. Useless for tourists.
• Vodafone App: Same problem—only accepts Turkish cards. But if you have a Turkish bank account, you can link it. Don’t bother.

3. USSD Codes (The Only Workable Way)

Call these codes from your phone’s dialer. Crucial: You must be on the carrier’s network (Turkcell/Vodafone) to use them.

• Turkcell: 100# (check balance), 100*1# (buy 50 TL data pack). Type the numbers, not the 1001#—Turkish phones auto-convert. If your phone doesn’t, type 1001 (no asterisks).
• Vodafone: 100# (balance), 100*1# (data). Same issue—use numbers: 1001.

4. Online Top-Up

Websites like turkcell.com.tr or vodafone.com.tr let you buy data, but require Turkish payment methods. No PayPal, no Visa. You’ll get an email with a voucher code, but you still need to enter it at a booth.

5. Scratch Card Vouchers

Find them at:

• Pharmacies (e.g., Apotheke in Istanbul)—they sell "Turkcell kupon" for 5 TL, 10 TL, 20 TL.
• Post offices (PTT)—same as pharmacies, but slower.
• Never at 7-Eleven. They only sell food/drinks.

Common Problems Tourists Face

• Language barrier: Cashiers say "Yapamıyorum" (I can’t) when asked for data refill. They’ll just hand you a scratch card without explaining how to use it.
• Apps only in Turkish: Vodafone app shows "Hesap" (account) but won’t let you add a foreign card. You’ll get stuck on "Ödeme Yöntemi" (payment method).
