Activation is dead simple: download the app, buy your plan, scan the QR code on your phone’s settings (Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM). Your phone will handle the rest. For dual-SIM users: eSIM will show as "eSIM" in settings, and you can keep your regular physical SIM active. No need to remove your old SIM.

Hungary has three main carriers:

- Telekom booth (left after passport control, near Terminal 2)
- Vodafone counter (same area, blue logo)
Don’t buy at the airport if you plan to stay >3 days—airport SIMs are pricier. For cheaper options, head to:
- Convenience stores: Lidl, Aldi, Kaufland (open late, sell SIM cards with starter credit)
- Carrier shops: Look for "Telekom" or "Vodafone" signs on streets near hotels (e.g., Vodafone shop at 55 Andrássy út, Budapest).
WHERE & HOW to Top Up (The REAL Guide)
Most tourists buy a SIM at the airport but panic when data runs out. Here’s how to refill without stress:
1. Convenience Stores (Your Best Bet)
- Where: Lidl, Aldi, Kaufland, and tobacco shops (called "bárszó" in Hungarian—look for the "Rakétás" or "Bárszó" sign). Never ask for "tobacco store"—say "bárszó" or point to a shop selling lottery tickets.
- How: Buy a top-up voucher card (500HUF, 1000HUF, 2000HUF, 5000HUF). Scratch off the code, then dial *100# (Telekom) or *101# (Vodafone) on your phone. Enter the code, press call. Done. Works for all carriers.
2. Carrier Apps (If You Can Navigate Hungarian)
- Telekom App: "Telekom" app. Works with international cards. Requires Hungarian phone number to register (use your tourist SIM). Tip: Download it BEFORE arriving.
- Vodafone App: "Vodafone Magyarország" app. Same as Telekom—needs Hungarian number. Don’t waste time trying to use it without a Hungarian number.
- Problem: Apps are 100% in Hungarian. "Adatcsomag" = data pack. "Töltés" = top-up. If you can’t read Hungarian, skip this.
3. USSD Codes (The Simplest Way)
- Check Balance: Dial *100# (Telekom), *101# (Vodafone), *102# (Telenor)
- Buy Data Pack: Dial *100# → select "Adatcsomag" → choose plan → press call. Works for all carriers. Ask the shop for a voucher card first—USSD codes need a code.
4. Online Top-Up (Rarely Needed)
Only for Telekom: Go to telekom.hu → "Töltés" (Top-up) → pay with card. But you’ll need Hungarian ID to register. Skip it.
Common Problems Tourists Face
- Credit cards rejected: Stores (even Lidl) often won’t accept Visa/Mastercard for top-up cards. Always pay with cash.
- Store staff doesn’t understand "top-up": Say "Voucher kártya" (voucher card) or "Adatcsomag" (data pack). Show them the top-up card you want (500HUF or 1000HUF). Never say "recharge" — it means "charge" like a battery.
- Apps only in Hungarian: Don’t bother trying to use them. Use USSD codes + voucher cards instead.
- Stores don’t sell top-up cards: This happens at airports. Always buy a top-up card at the airport when you get your SIM, or get it at Lidl/Aldi first.
