Forget the airport SIM hassle. For Bosnia, eSIM is the only sane choice. Here's what actually works:
All eSIMs here piggyback on Telekom Srpske (TS), Bosnia's largest network. Coverage is decent in cities (Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka) but spotty in mountains or rural areas. If you're hiking near Blagaj Monastery, don't expect signal. In cities, it's usually 4G.
1. Buy Airalo/Holafly eSIM before leaving home (no airport option). 2. Scan the QR code on your phone. 3. For dual-SIM: Use the physical SIM for calls (if you get one) and eSIM for data. 4. Crucial: Enable "Cellular Data" in settings. Some phones default to "Data Roaming" off. 5. If it fails, restart your phone. Always works.
Don't buy a physical SIM at the airport unless you want to spend 2 hours in a panic. Here's why:
Here’s how you actually recharge, and why it’s a nightmare:
Only sell top-up cards (scratch cards) for TS and MTS. Problem: Cards are often out of stock. If you find one, it’s 10 BAM (~$5.50) for 5GB. Where: Billa/Makro checkout counters. Ask for "Karta za napunjavanje" (top-up card). They won't understand "data pack" or "recharge".
MTS has an app, but it only accepts local bank cards. No international cards. Telekom Srpske app exists but is in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. Useless for tourists.
Text the code to 111 (TS) or 112 (MTS) for balance/data:
TS has a website (telekomsrpske.ba), but it's in Bosnian. No English. No international credit card option. Only works if you have a local bank account.
Find them at Billa/Makro or "Kiosks" (small shops) near markets. Always ask for "Karta za napunjavanje Telekom" or "MTS" specifically. If they say "nema" (no), move on.
1. Go to a Billa or Makro supermarket (not the airport). 2. Show staff the USSD code *111# for TS. 3. Say "Napuni 5GB, molim" (Top-up 5GB, please). 4. If they say "nema", walk 2 blocks to the next Billa. 5. If all else fails, use Airalo's eSIM chat support (they answer in English).
Bosnia is not like Japan or Germany. Recharging here is a treasure hunt with zero margin for error. You buy a SIM, run out of data, and spend
