Belgium’s eSIM scene is simple but limited. Airalo and Holafly are your main options—local eSIMs are rare for tourists. Proximus (Belgium’s largest carrier) doesn’t offer public eSIMs. Here’s the breakdown:
Both Airalo and Holafly piggyback on Proximus (Belgium’s strongest network). Coverage is excellent in cities (Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent) and decent in rural areas. Avoid the Ardennes for calls, but data’s fine.
Activation: Download the app, scan the QR code, and activate via Wi-Fi. For dual-SIM phones: Set the eSIM as your primary (not the physical SIM) to avoid roaming fees. Proximus won’t let you use a local SIM + eSIM simultaneously—use eSIM only.
Belgium has four major operators. Always buy a tourist SIM (not a contract):
Where to buy (Avoid airport counters—they’re 2x the price!):
This is where tourists get stuck. Forget apps—Belgium’s top-up systems are confusing for foreigners. Here’s how to actually do it:
Go to Carrefour, Delhaize, or Colruyt. Ask for a top-up voucher (e.g., "Un coupon pour recharger ma carte"). Buy a €10 or €20 voucher (sold as a scratch card). You’ll get a code like "1234567890".
Use these before your data runs out. Dial from your phone (no app needed):
Important: Dial the code from the SIM you’re topping up. If you use 111#, it’ll show your balance. Then dial 112# to buy data.
Find these at Carrefour, Delhaize, or newsstands (called "Carte de recharge" or "Voucher"). Buy the exact value you want (€5, €10, €20). Scratch off the code and text it to the number on the card (e.g., "1234567890" → text to 1234).
1. Go to Carrefour or Delhaize immediately. Buy a €5 voucher (not €10—save cash). 2. Text the code from the voucher to the number on the card (usually 1234 or 5555). 3. Wait 2 minutes—data activates. 4. **
