For Austria, Airalo is your best eSIM partner—works everywhere, no roaming fees. Yesim and Holafly also work but Airalo’s plans are cheaper and more reliable. Local eSIMs (like A1’s) are useless for tourists—they require residency or a local bank account.
Airalo piggybacks on A1’s network (best in cities, decent in countryside). Drei’s network is weaker outside cities. Activation is instant: scan the QR code in the Airalo app, wait 2 minutes, and you’re connected. Works on dual-SIM phones—just set it as your secondary line (not the main one for calls).
Forget the airport—buying a SIM at Vienna Airport (VIE) is a rip-off (€25 for 500MB). You’ll pay 3x more than at a supermarket. Tourists often buy a local SIM but then panic when they can’t top it up. Let’s fix that.
Three main carriers:
Buy at any supermarket (Billa, Hofer, Spar) or electronics store (MediaMarkt, Saturn). A1’s own shops exist but are rare outside cities. Ask for "Prepaid-SIM" or "SIM-Karte" (not "tourist SIM"—they don’t use that term).
Forget "recharge"—Austrians say "aufladen" or "top-up." Here’s how to actually do it:
Go to Billa, Hofer, or Spar (supermarkets, not 7-Eleven). At the checkout, say: "Ich möchte eine SIM-Karte aufladen, bitte" (I want to top up my SIM card). They sell Prepaid-Karten (scratch cards) for €5, €10, €20. Scratch off the code, then dial the top-up code for your carrier (see below). Never hand the store clerk your phone—just buy the card.
Text the code directly on your phone (no app needed):
*100# → select "Prepaid" → choose amount (€5, €10, €20) → confirm.*123# → select "SIM aufladen" → pick amount.*123# → same as Orange.Crucial: You must have at least €1 balance on your SIM to use USSD codes. If you’re out of credit, you’ll get an error message.
Go to a1.net → click "Prepaid Top-Up" → enter your number. Works with international cards. Only for A1 users.
Buy "Prepaid-Karte" (€5, €10, €20) at any supermarket checkout. Scratch off the code, then dial the USSD code for your carrier (see above). Works even if your phone has no signal—just use the USSD codes on your phone’s dialer.
If you’re out of data and can’t find a supermarket:
Let’s be real: Austria isn’t terrible for physical SIMs, but it’s still a headache. You’ll waste hours hunting for a store that sells top-up cards, then get rejected at the cash register for "not speaking German." I’ve seen tourists cry at the airport counter because they couldn’t top up their SIM. It’s not worth the stress.
