Best Day Trips from Munich: Where to Go & How to Get There

Stop overthinking this. I’ve done every single one of these as a solo traveler with zero planning. Here’s what actually works:

Salzburg (50 min by train)

Why it’s perfect for first-timers

Catch the S-Bahn (S2) from Munich Hbf—€5-8, 50 minutes. You’ll step off the train in a real city, not a theme park. Wander past Mozart’s birthplace, grab a Salzburger Nockerl (soufflé) at Café Tomas, and hike up to Hohensalzburg Castle (€12, 20 min climb). Pro tip: Go early—crowds hit after 11 a.m. and the castle views get blocked by selfie sticks.

Neuschwanstein Castle (1.5 hours total)

Skip the tour bus, do it like a local

Train to Füssen (€10, 1 hour), then bus #72 to the castle (€1.50, 15 min). Do NOT go at 9 a.m.—it’s packed. Go at 3 p.m. instead. I got all the castle photos alone while everyone else was back in Füssen eating Bretzeln (pretzels). The hike from the bus stop is steep but worth it for the views. No overnight needed—return by 8 p.m.

Berchtesgaden (1.5 hours by train + cable car)

For nature lovers who hate crowds

Train to Berchtesgaden (€15, 1 hour), then cable car up to the Eagle’s Nest (€12 round-trip). Skip the Eagle’s Nest itself—it’s a tourist trap. Instead, hike the Eagle’s Nest Trail (easy, 45 min) for jaw-dropping Alps views. Lunch at Berggasthof Hintersee (€12 for a mountain cheese plate and beer). Bring rain gear—Alps change fast.

Dachau (30 min by train)

The sobering, essential stop

Train from Munich Hbf (S-Bahn S2, €2.50, 30 min). Don’t skip this. The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial is quiet, respectful, and only takes 2-3 hours. No need to stay overnight—return to Munich by 5 p.m. Bring tissues. It’s not a tourist spot—it’s a place you’ll remember long after you’ve left.

Why this works:

Now go. Munich is a boring city until you step off the train.
