Safford Airport (SAF) lost all commercial flights on March 31, 2023. That’s one clear date for travelers who relied on the 12-seat Embraer E120 flights. You can’t fly out of SAF anymore.
Before the shutdown, you’d drive 120 miles to Tucson International (TUS) for flights. Now, that drive takes 2 hours and 15 minutes without traffic. It’s not the same as hopping on a short flight from SAF.
Only American Eagle (operating as American Airlines regional flights) ever provided commercial service to SAF. They ran two daily flights using Embraer E120s until 2023. No other airline ever tried to serve this route.

I’ve seen Southwest fly TUS to Orlando (MCO) for $115 on a Tuesday. Book early, but don’t expect cheap prices. Phoenix (PHX) is cheaper overall for major airlines like Delta, but it’s a 2.5-hour drive from Safford. Tucson is the smartest choice.
Tucson International (TUS) is the closest alternative at 110 miles. Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is 160 miles away. Driving to PHX takes 2 hours and 45 minutes during rush hour on I-10. That’s not ideal if you’re in a hurry.
For destinations like Las Vegas (LAS), TUS has more direct flights than PHX. Southwest and Delta offer daily nonstop service from TUS to LAS. The flight time is 1 hour and 10 minutes. I’d always choose TUS over PHX for Safford travelers. It’s faster and cheaper.
Book domestic flights from TUS 2-3 months ahead for the best prices. Flights to Dallas (DFW) average $100-$140 one-way in August. That’s peak travel season, so prices rise. Book in May for lower rates.
Don’t wait for last-minute deals. I’ve seen TUS to Phoenix (PHX) flights jump to $150 on short notice. Always check Southwest and American Airlines first—they’re the most reliable for TUS routes. I’ve used their apps for years and they don’t hide fees.
