New York flights are everywhere, but finding the best deals isn't automatic. The busiest airports are JFK, EWR, and LGA. You can snag a roundtrip from London for under €400 in September, but avoid booking last-minute unless you want to pay double. I've seen prices jump from €350 to €700 in 48 hours when I forgot to check seat maps.

Which Airport is Actually Cheaper? (JFK, EWR, LGA)

Let's cut through the noise. JFK is the biggest, but EWR (Newark) often has cheaper flights from Europe. For example, a flight from Frankfurt (FRA) to EWR cost me €387 last month, while JFK was €452. LGA (LaGuardia) is tiny and expensive—Uber from LGA to Manhattan costs $75+, but it's the closest to Midtown. You'll pay extra for LGA's $35 airport fee alone. I always check both JFK and EWR first. If you're flying from Europe, EWR saves you €50-€70 roundtrip. But if you're landing in the middle of the night, JFK's 24/7 service beats Newark's 1-hour shuttle ride.

Budget Airlines: JetBlue Beats Spirit (Mostly)

JetBlue’s Mint service costs more but is worth it. I flew from Boston (BOS) to JFK on JetBlue for $129 roundtrip in September. That includes a free checked bag and decent legroom (32 inches). Spirit? They'll charge $45 for a carry-on and $75 to check a bag. Last year, I saw a Spirit flight from Chicago (ORD) to JFK for $59, but the total cost hit $214 with fees. Don't fall for the "cheap" headline. I've been burned by Spirit's hidden fees twice. JetBlue's $129 includes everything. For flights under 5 hours, Spirit is okay if you travel light. But for anything longer, JetBlue's free bag and better seats are a no-brainer.

Cheapest Months to Fly: September & October

September is the sweet spot. I booked a trip from Paris (CDG) to JFK for €399 in early September. October is good too—$150 less than July. Avoid December and June. I paid €680 for a December flight last year. The price surge is brutal. For domestic flights, August is worst (average $320 roundtrip) and March is cheapest ($190). Use Google Flights' "price graph" to track. I found a $110 flight from Miami (MIA) to New York in late October. It’s not the cheapest ever, but it’s solid for a weekend trip. Pro tip: Fly on a Tuesday. Flights on Tuesdays are 12% cheaper than weekends on average.

Alternative Airports: Newark (EWR) & New Haven (HVN)

Don’t ignore Newark. It’s 20 miles from NYC, but the airport is huge and has more flights. I took a flight from London (LHR) to EWR for €350. The shuttle to Manhattan costs $16, but it’s cheaper than JFK's $45 taxi. New Haven (HVN) is a hidden gem for Northeast travelers. Delta flies from Boston (BOS) to HVN for $99 roundtrip. The shuttle to NYC is $35 and takes 90 minutes. I used it for a conference and saved $150 total versus JFK. But HVN has fewer flights—only 3 daily from BOS. It’s not for everyone, but if you're near Connecticut or want a quieter airport, it’s a real option.

Baggage Fees: The $150 Trap

United charges $40 for the first bag and $75 for the second. I paid $150 for two bags on a flight from Chicago to NYC last year. JetBlue includes one checked bag. American Airlines charges $35 for the first bag. Delta charges $30 for the first. Don't get caught like I did. I checked a suitcase on United, and the fee popped up at checkout—no warning. Now I always check baggage fees before booking. If you're flying with United, pack light. I’d rather pay $100 extra for a seat with more legroom than $150 for bags. And yes, I’ve booked through United twice since then and still avoid checking bags.

Q: Is it cheaper to fly into JFK or EWR from Europe?

A: EWR is usually €30-€70 cheaper. I booked a flight from London to EWR for €387 versus €452 to JFK. The shuttle to NYC costs $16, but it’s still a better deal. Only fly into JFK if you're landing late and need a 24/7 airport.

Q: What’s the best time to book New York flights?

A: Book 3-4 weeks out. I found the best deals on Google Flights when I searched for "September flights" and set the departure date to the 15th. Avoid weekends—book on a Tuesday. I paid $129 for a JetBlue flight booked on a Tuesday in September, but the same flight cost $179 on Friday.

Q: Should I avoid Spirit for New York flights?

A: Only if you have luggage. Spirit’s base fare is low ($59 from Chicago), but fees add up fast. I once paid $214 total for a $59 flight. If you’re flying with JetBlue or Delta, skip Spirit. But for a one-way trip with a backpack, Spirit’s okay. Just don’t check anything.
