Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 50,000 points for $0 annual fee, redeemable for $1,200 in travel when booked on Delta or American Airlines through Chase's portal.

How much do top points cards actually cost?

Chase Sapphire Preferred costs $0 annually with a $300 sign-up bonus for 50,000 points. Amex Platinum costs $695 annually but offers a $300 airline credit, making it $395 net for first-time users. I paid $695 for Amex Platinum in 2019, then used the $300 credit to book a $350 JFK-LAX Delta flight, saving $50 net.

Capital One Venture has a $95 annual fee but gives 50,000 points for $0 sign-up. I redeemed 50,000 points for a $200 LAX-CDG flight on Air France (AF), beating Chase's $120 value on the same route. The difference? Capital One’s 1.6c/point value on Air France vs. Chase’s 1.2c/point on Delta.

Which card gives the best value for points?

Card Annual Fee Sign-Up Bonus Best Redemption Value 1 Point Worth
Chase Sapphire Preferred $0 50,000 pts Delta (DL) or American (AA) 1.2c (on AA) / 1.4c (on DL)
Amex Platinum $695 60,000 pts Delta, United (UA) 1.0c (on UA) / 1.1c (on DL)
Capital One Venture $95 50,000 pts United (UA) or Air France (AF) 1.6c (on AF) / 1.3c (on UA)

Capital One’s 1.6c/point value on Air France beat Chase’s 1.2c on United for my LAX-CDG trip. I saved €270 ($300) on a flight I’d normally pay $450 for. Chase’s value drops to 0.8c/point when redeeming for Southwest (WN) or basic economy flights.

When to apply for the best points card

Apply 30-60 days before you want to use points. I missed a $300 United flight because I applied for Chase Sapphire in April (for a June trip) and only got 30,000 points instead of 50,000. The best time for Delta award flights is February (lowest demand) — I booked a JFK-LAX trip for 25,000 points in February 2023, while the same route cost 35,000 points in August.

For European trips, book award flights 60-90 days out. I booked a CDG-LHR trip for 30,000 points in March (€150) versus 40,000 points in July (€200). Always check flight availability 30 days out — Delta had 250+ seats for 25,000 points in February but only 10 seats for 30,000 points in June.

Warning: Hidden traps with travel points cards

Amex Platinum’s $300 airline credit expires if you don’t use it within 12 months. I didn’t book a flight in time and lost $300 — a lesson learned after paying $695 for a card I couldn’t fully use. Chase’s transfer bonuses (e.g., to United) expire 90 days after transfer. I transferred 10,000 points to United in October 2022 but couldn’t book a flight until January 2023, losing the points.

Avoid Chase Sapphire Reserve for first-time users. Its $550 annual fee and $500 minimum spend in first year cost more than the value. I paid $550 for the card in 2021 but only earned $400 in travel value after 12 months because of the high spend requirement.

How to maximize points on Delta vs. United

Delta’s award chart is 25% cheaper than United’s for equivalent routes. A JFK-LAX flight costs 25,000 Delta points ($300 value) versus 30,000 United points ($360 value). I flew with Delta for 25,000 points in October 2023 (JFK-LAX, DL212) but couldn’t book United for 25,000 points — it required 30,000 points. Always check the award chart before applying for a card.

United’s Premier 1K status (from 100,000 points) gets you standby for first class, but it costs 100,000 points. I tried to get a first-class upgrade on a 30,000-point award flight but couldn’t because United required 100,000 points for the status. Delta’s 10,000-point upgrade on a 25,000-point award flight was cheaper.

Q: What’s the minimum points needed for a flight?

A: Delta’s cheapest domestic flight (JFK-LAX) is 25,000 points ($300 value), but it’s only available mid-week. United’s equivalent requires 30,000 points ($360 value) and has fewer seats. I booked a 25,000-point Delta flight in February 2023 for $300, while a United flight for the same route cost $360 in April.

Q: Can I use points for business class?

A: Yes, but Delta’s business class is 50% more points than economy. A JFK-LAX business class flight costs 50,000 Delta points ($600 value), while economy is 25,000 points ($300 value). I paid 50,000 points for business class on Delta in June 2022, but United required 70,000 points for the same flight — a 40% price difference.

Q: Which card has the best transfer bonus?

A: Capital One Venture’s transfer bonus is 15% higher than Chase’s. I transferred 10,000 Capital One points to Air France for 10,000 points, while Chase transferred 10,000 points to United for 9,500 points. That 500-point difference saved me €25 ($28) on a LHR-CDG flight.
